May COEN Community of Practice Meeting

Thursday, May 25, 5:30-7:30 PM

Panera Bread, 640 S Colorado Blvd, Glendale

Topic: Qualitative Dilemmas

Facilitator: Kristi Jackson, Queri, Inc.

Notes: COEN notes qualitative 2017-05-25.doc

Please join us on Thursday, May 25th for our fifth COEN Community of Practice meeting. These meetings are informal, like the socials we used to have, but with a specific topic, facilitator, and practice-building purpose to guide discussion. They are intended to let you share with and learn from your colleagues and grow in the profession.

From 5:30 to 6:00 we will gather, introduce ourselves, and get coffee or dinner at the counter if you wish.

At 6:00 we'll start our informal discussion: Qualitative Dilemmas.  Dilemmas in qualitative evaluation research run throughout the implementation of a project, from design to collection to analysis to reporting. In addition to the “normal” day-to-day dilemmas, we might also encounter ethical dilemmas (e.g., “how do I choose between transparency and confidentiality as competing values in the research process?”). When we face dilemmas, we must make a choice between two or more options.  In this community of practice meeting, we will discuss the salient qualitative dilemmas in our practice and develop strategies for making choices. The 1-page AEA Guiding Principles document is downloadable here (AEA Guiding Principles.pdf) as optional reading to think about qualitative dilemmas in the broader evaluation context (or you may access it via your AEA membership at http://www.eval.org/p/cm/ld/fid=51).

Please bring your questions and insights to share from your own evaluation experience. Also bring a colleague!

Upcoming months will feature qualitative dilemmas on May 25, facilitation on June 22, diversity and multicultural issues on July 27, and culturally relevant evaluation on August 23.

Have a suggestion for a location in another area of the metro for a future meeting? Would you like to facilitate a future discussion? Send the suggestions to us at Colo.Eval.Network@gmail.com.
