Data visualization often focuses on the quantifiable: numbers that help tell the story of what, when, where, and how much. But using visuals can be even more powerful when it comes to qualitative data, both for exploring and for explaining the who, the how, and the why. During this three-hour workshop, we will practice using visuals to elicit insights, analyze themes, and share key ideas. This workshop will include a mixture of presentations, large group discussions, as well as partner and small group activities.
Learning Objectives: During this workshop, participants will:
Become familiar with the principles of human-centered design and fundamentals of storytelling and understand how these apply to data visualization
Understand the similarities and differences between quantitative and qualitative data visualization
Compare various tools and techniques for visualizing qualitative data
Gain practice and confidence in using visuals to describe qualitative data
Engage in peer learning and get constructive feedback
About the Facilitator: Lydia Hooper supports organizations in collaborating and communicating about data and complex topics. With a background in education, science, and design, she seeks to use her expertise to bridge the all-too-common gap between research & analysis and marketing & communications. Lydia has partnered with more than 50 organizations to help them share data-driven stories, including the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver Health, Bell Policy Center, Denver Agency on Human Rights and Community Partnerships, and The Wilderness Society.
